FRANCE 3 - Chateaux Villandry & Usse

Our third day in the Loire Valley was on a Sunday, so we ventured into Tours for church.  I always love attending church in different places.  We may not be able to understand the language, but the spirit is always the same.

The Chateau and Gardens of Villandry
Villandry is known mainly for the gardens.  They were amazing!

I didn't get very many pictures of the outside of the chateau, but got a lot of the inside.  Villandry was built in 1536.  Only the keep remains from the original castle.  The interior design seemed much more warm and "homey" than some of the other castles we had seen.

This room was a child's room and one of my favorites.  Probably because I was desperately missing my kids that day...
In 1754 Villandry was redesigned and added to, but it wasn't until it was purchased in 1906, by the great-grandfather of the present owner, that the gardens were created.  They were designed to reflect the architecture of the chateau.

There were many gardens, but the one that impressed me the most was the Love Garden.  There were different squares that made up the garden, and each represented a different kind of love; Tender Love, Passionate Love, Fickle Love & Tragic Love.

Chateau d'Usse
This chateau is believed to have been the chateau that Charles Perrault had in mind when writing the classic story of Sleeping Beauty!

The theme of Sleeping Beauty was played up throughout the castle with manikins playing out the different scenes.  I didn't really care for that aspect of it, but the castle itself was really charming.  This castle probably had the most little passageways and spires than any of the others that we saw, which made it fun...and slightly disorienting...as we wondered around.

Next to the castle was a little chapel.

I am amazed at the amount of detail in the architecture.  Under the archway of the chapel depicts the twelve disciples:
